Yeah, that could happen to me.

So there I was, sitting on the dock, fishing pole in hand, cold brew and the sun coming up when it hit me. Literally, something falls out of the sky, and hits me. So I'm all like, what the fuck, you know. I still to this day don't know what it is. I keep it in a case in my office. Honestly, it was the best thing that ever happened to me. You see, one minute I'm sitting there by the lake, and the next thing I know I'm in a freakin' ambulance. Flying through town, sirens blaring, machines beeping... an ambulance, for Christ's sake.
Now I know, you're thinking, what the hell does that do to suggest that this is the best thing that ever happened to me right? Well, shut up and I'll tell you.
So I'm riding in the ambulance, flying off to the emergency room. Well, I get to the hospital and I am like all strapped down and I can't move and people are all screaming and I can tell there's blood and a lot of it by the way I keep blacking out and coming too, right. And they're all talking like, oh she was drinking, and we found this thing and what the hell is that. So I make it into the local paper, and all of a sudden, I'm a freaking celebrity. Scientists want to know what the heck this thing is, I get a commercial deal for Coors cause of all the publicity, and the next thing you know, I'm quitting my job and getting more ass than you can imagine. Yeah, a bit more interesting now, huh?
So I'm riding the wave of success in light of being smashed in the head by some random object when I remember I didn't get to finish fishing. Not that it was all that important, but I grabbed the hottest ass I could find and bought myself a damn fishing boat right. Well, it turns out that this guy is heir to some lotion fortune or something, and here I am in Bermuda chilling on the beach. Just married.
Yeah, that could happen to me.

Food for thought...

So there is a lot of talk about Snow White and her living all alone with seven men. But I have to say, I admire the girl. I mean, can you think of one other woman you know who got seven, not one, not two, but seven men to clean up after themselves?!?!

BlahBlahBlah

So, here I am, searching around yahoo, and what do I find? Bullshit!!!!
Yesterday, I wasted ten minutes of my life reading one of their head articles entitled something along the lines of
"Vending Machine Foods to Avoid and What to Eat Instead."
Ok, if you are a wizened person, you may have guessed that this article pretty much tells you not to eat anything out of vending machines. But, I thought it might have an idea or two about what I should eat instead, presuming of course, that the latter group of choices would be out of that same vending machine with all the naughtiness. But no, it goes on to say have a yogurt or a diet soda. Well bull-e.
Seriously!
So then today, I am reading this article about exercising myths, and I personally think this guy is full of crap too!!!

Plus I can't help but think that he looks like an uglier, creepier version of Peter Weller with botox!

The First 2008 Presidential Debate

Hello all, glad you chose to read what I have to say.
I think that this was a good debate, though I was rather disappointed on both sides to hear much of the same slogans stories and slander that we have been hearing for 9 months. Unfortunately for those of you who know my political bias, this might come off as aggressive, but really the one of those stories that stuck out like a sore thumb as a repeat was McCain's story about Eisenhower and the Normandy invasion. I seem to have heard this one before, could it have been at the RNC?
I did think that McCain seemed a bit tense, perhaps he was nervous. He seemed rather rigid to me.
I also did notice that Obama seemed to stutter a bit on some of his answers.
I was disappointed with both candidates on their answer to the question about what they would cut to provide for this Bail Out. I thought that the second time around, Obama did seem to revise his answer a bit, he mentioned that he would have to cut some aspects of his alternative energy projects, though he did neglect to mention which ones.
McCain seemed to stick to this "I've got a pen, and I'm going to veto every single spending bill that comes across my desk. I will make them famous. You will know their names." popular phrase. That, personally, scares me. I think that if what he means is that he will veto excessive or unreasonable spending bills, great, but he should be more clear on that because quite frankly, we do need to spend some money. If we aren't going to spend any of it, why are we giving it to the government in the first place, and what are we not getting in return?
As a side note, I could only find one source that clearly sorted McCains suggested Citizens Against Government Waste website, as the site itself is rather confusing. This Blogger took it upon (his/her)self to summarize the earmarks supposedly requested by Senator Obama. Various other websites have suggested that McCain is fudging numbers, including the $100Million he could supposedly save us "tomorrow."
But enough of that. Both of the candidates concern me with their energy plans.
I think that Obama wants to spread himself too thin, sending money to various different projects, which in a healthy economy, would be a great idea. I think that with the way things are right now, we should really be focusing on one or two very promising technologies, and we should be working on those areas where the greatest environmental impact could be affected to the greatest degree. Namely, vehicular and electric power alternatives. The technology exists to have electric cars, and quite frankly, I think they would be safer. Bio-diesel seems to be driving up the price of food, and I don't really know that it is all that sustainable, renewable though it is.
McCain also worries me, because I would not be surprised to see oil supplies dwindle if not end in my lifetime, and I do think that we should focus more on alternative energy and getting ourselves off of our oil dependency altogether. Neither candidate really gave me confidence that they have what it takes to accomplish that, but Obama seems a bit more in touch with alternative energy projects and their necessity.
On foreign policy, I am not really all that confident in either candidate. I think that they are both passive-aggressive. However, I have a bit more confidence in Biden in this area than in Palin, so, there it is.
I did think it was a healthy debate, I thought that both candidates made some great points, and I have especially enjoyed reading the banter online critiquing that debate, which is what has led me to this.
Here is one to ponder, and this will be my final statement.
On several occasions, Obama began sentences with, "When I am President..."
In similar situations, McCain chose less difinitive wording.
I don't have time to run through the transcripts right now to pull out the quotes, but I hope to find time after I finish my homework, and I will then update this blog.
Thank you for taking time to read my drivel, and I look forward to your comments.
Your compatriot,
Katie May

GI Joe Jungle Trap

Yeah, from the good old days...

IQ test

So, I was wandering around the internet today and I decided to take an IQ test. My score was 129, which doesn't make me a genius (I object, I am totally a genius!), but it does put me plenty of points above average. In fact, I was looking and thinking to myself that I am above the average PhD graduate. Well, then school should be really easy for me, right? If only I wasn't wasting all my time taking online IQ tests...

So, here's a paper I wrote, if you want to read it.

Poverty in the Classroom
By Katie May Smith
Written August 2008
Published here on Google Blogger September 15, 2008

“Children are resilient, and a sensitive teacher can ameliorate the affects of poverty,” ~Shirley Aamidor, Ph.D. Professor of Education IU Kokomo

Poverty is an often overlooked, and very serious problem, and one that is quite personal to me, as I grew up well below the poverty line. According to the Institute for Research on Poverty, “In 2003, 12.9 million children in the U.S. under the age of 18, or more than one in six children, were living in poverty (U.S. Census Bureau, 2004).” Poverty is never a child’s fault or responsibility, and yet it rests on their shoulders like the weight of the world. Children carry their poverty into every situation in their lives, including, and perhaps especially to the classroom.

Many poor students are not as well prepared to learn as their classmates from more stable homes, and for a number of reasons. Issues like residential mobility and often changing schools, and poor nutrition can severely affect a child’s education. Furthermore, parents struggling to make ends meet are less likely to afford educational supplies that children need, from art supplies, to instruments, to the most basic necessities like clothes, pencils and paper, and are likely too distracted by the rigors of their lifestyle to have enough time or energy to actively engage in their children’s education. As a result of these factors, impoverished children can suffer socially and academically (Pellino, 2007).

Poverty reaches into the hearts of its children, and causes them to feel less valuable than their classmates. That very attitude can lead students to strive less fervently than they should to achieve in the classroom despite the obstacles they face (Pellino, 2007). The attitudes of teachers, administrators, other students and community members can have a significant impact on a student’s confidence in the classroom. With that power, there comes a responsibility to use that impact to the benefit all of our students, and especially the less fortunate, in any way that we reasonably can.

Katie May

Childhood Rhymes

Six, Eight, Nine,
The goose drank wine
The monkey chewed Tobacco
On the Street Car Line

The Line Broke
The monkey got choked
And they all went to Heaven
In a Little Row Boat

Quack Quack!

Recently I was thinking of that rhyme that I learned as Bobo- Shi Otten Totten. But the site that I found listing it had the words all wrong. They had it as Bobo Ski Wotten Totten.

Bobo Shi Otten Totten
Uh-uh, I ain't no fool!
Itty bitty Otten Totten
Bobo Shi Otten Totten
Bobo Shi Otten Totten
Boom!

But they had

Bo-bo ski watten totten,
Ah-ah-ah, boom boom boom
Itty bitty wotten totten
Bo bo ski watten tatten
Bo bo ski wotten tatten-BOOM. (Thanks to Azlyn)

Which is correct? Does it matter? Anyhow.
So, I thought I would blog about it!! Ha-ha.

"I like your verbs that are things. I think I'm gonna sandwich after I sofa here for a bit."

Yeah, that's from some commercial, I think it's funny.

Well, boring post, this is goodbye.

So, this is what is going on

So, here I am at work. I have signed up for my fall classes, which will be Child Development, Comparative Religion, and Anatomy and Physiology. It is going to be a lot of work, but hopefully also a lot of fun.
E and I just got an apartment together, yay, it is so cute, and I can't wait to get it all decorated up. It's going to be so much fun!
Ok, well I have to go, but stay tuned, I have a few stories to share with you that I wrote for creative writing.

Well, you found me

Well, it looks like you found my blog. I haven't been up to too much lately. I'm in the throes of summer learning, I am taking Creative Writing and Management of the Classroom. Some of the assignments for the latter pose an issue being summertime, and also being that I don't have any small children readily available to interview about some of the subjects, but overall, it is a worthwhile experience.
Creative writing has been really fun. It turns out, though, that I am not so good with the punctuation on dialog. I've always hated writing dialog! It has been a bit easier with a bit of instruction, though.
Also, my Nana just sent me the instructions on how to play Screw Your Neighbor. That is a really fun card game, and I'm going to post the instructions here so that I can always find them when I need them, and maybe you all can find them too. Well, I should get some work done.
Tchao.

Well, Look at you, reading my blog...

How sweet of you to come back and read my blog. I'm just here watching Sixteen Candles and waiting for my sexy boyfriend. I've been a bit drained lately, like I have a cold, but not really, just no energy. Did that ever happen to you? Well, I guess I haven't really got too much to say right now. Ok, goodbye.

I just have one question...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cQJIQ6AbUk

Above is a link. Follow it and watch this video. Then continue reading.

Ok, perhaps this is a familiar commercial. Perhaps you have seen it on TV. Mothers, you might even be glad for this product, maybe you really love it. The commercial is well shot, good light, good makeup, and yet...

What kind of a person could put together a commercial where they have to make all of those babies cry just so that they could film it?

I mean that is just so mean!!!

Saturday, May 17, 2008

well...

I just watched the movie The Descent. Great film. Wow, I am really happy that I finally watched that. My co-worker has been telling me to watch that for some time. The only issue I had was that I was drinking Gin and Tonics, and I have a tendency to sip when I get nervous or anxious, so by the end of the movie here, I am quite buzzed. But seriously, that was a fantastic movie. I have three for tomorrow. I have Silent Hill, House of 1000 Corpses, and The Devil's Rejects for tomorrow, and I am just not sure that they can live up to this one. I mean, this was really an original. The plot was complete, the suspense, the surprise, the gore and the drama were all there, and there was a twist ending. What more could you want out of a horror movie? Or any movie for that matter? I mean, wow.
On another note, I am looking forward to my classes this summer. I just got my books today. I am especially excited for creative writing. I started a story: I am seven pages in. yay.
Well, J has to get up early for work tomorrow, so I should stop typing, it might be keeping him from falling asleep.
Thanks for reading,
Katie

Guess I have been slacking...

Sorry to any readers that I might actually have, I seem to have been slacking on my postings here. School has been pretty intense this semester, so... anyway. It has been a lot of fun for the most part though. This semester I took Effective Speaking, and though it was nerve racking, I really enjoyed learning so much from my classmates. I also took Bioethics, and got a chance to examine my own views on these issues. You see, living in Vermont, I find that a lot of the time my views are more corroborated than challenged. It was a great chance to have my views challenged by people who actually have taken time to consider their position, and have rational, intelligent supports for their views. So that was really a lot of fun.
Saturday is Green Up Day here in Vermont, everyone get out your trashbags and go out and clean up your yards and roadsides and parks. We love to keep it green and clean here in Vermont, if only all states would follow suit with this holiday. Then again, other states don't have as many breweries supporting cleaning up the garbage! Thank you Otter Creek!
Well, that is about all I have to say about that.
Talk to you later.

The Birds

It was a phenomenon. Hundreds of crows, literally at least 200 crows. It was about 9:30 Friday night, I was working at the video store. A customer came in and was browsing around for a while. He asked if we had seen the birds. Naturally, working in a video store, I assumed that he meant the old Hitchcock flick. Of course, I love that movie. No, I mean the birds outside, he replied. Huh? I inquired, oh so eloquently. You can even hear them inside here, Matt piped in. We stepped outside to have a gander. Surely enough, there they were. The sky was quite accommodating to the sight. A full moon, partially blocked out by eerie clouds set the perfect stage to give these creatures an added boost over the intimidating presence lent to them already by their sheer numbers. It was a scene right out of that old Hitchcock film. Why they are here I can honestly say, I don't know. Perhaps a bad omen, or hopefully a good one. Some of you may be thinking, well, she is an aspiring writer, but I assure you, this is no made up story. You should have heard the sound as they all descended upon the bare branches of the trees. The flapping of their wings against one another, in conjunction with the sounds of the branches bending under their weight. I cannot even describe it here. And then it was silent.

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Wow, what an exciting day. So, I woke up this morning, and decided that I needed to do something with my life. So, I hopped in my car, I had a full tank of gas, and off I went. My first stop was a small gathering of people that I came across in Randolph VT. I just saw all of them standing there and thought that I would see what was up. It turns out that this young couple had just bought a house. They brought with them a brand new washing machine, and so they took the old out and put it on the lawn with a sign that said "Free OBO." Well, as it turned out, with all of the temperature changes lately, and the very soft nature of that particular chunk of land, the machine had sunk its way pretty well into the earth, where it had become frozen in again. An older man had stopped by, in need of a washing machine, and attempted to pry it out of the earth. Well, a middle aged woman saw this elder fussing with the machine and stopped by to help him. She thought that it would be a good idea to pour water all around to melt the ground, but she did not realize that between the water already being so cold from sitting in her car, and the ground being frozen, that it would just freeze and make things worse. Another car came by, this a man, who had thought that the solution would be to use heat, he had an industrial blower in his truck, and he thought that if they could somehow get it to blow the heat off of his engine at the machine, the it might work. Well... That was just a dumb idea. This was about the time that the young couple, in whose yard all of these people were milling about, returned from breakfast. The young man thought that he could break up the earth with an array of tools, and this is where I showed up. I told them all that I thought that we had enough of us standing there to just push it out with our combined manpower, and sure enough, we managed it ok. I said nice to meet you all, but I must be on my way. And off I went.

The next leg of my journey took me to West Lebanon NH. Nothing too fancy going on there, I stopped for coffee and decided to head back. Unfortunately, that was not to be so easy. Somehow, it seemed, I just kept getting on the highway going the wrong way, turning around, and doing it all over again. I finally decided that the only way to be found, was to try to get lost, and sure enough, it worked, and I was on my way.

Here I thought that I should stop in Rutland for a quick trip to Wal Mart. I do hate Wal Mart, but you can't beat their prices on litter and 68 packs of toilet paper, so, what the heck, I said. Well, wouldn't you know it, parking was an adventure. I thought about pulling a Towanda, but I am not older, and I don't have more insurance. It seemed like the same brown SUV kept pulling into my spot, five times this happened. It turned out it was only the same one twice. But still. Then, wouldn't you know it, that same woman took the last Scott tissue on the shelf and I had to get Charmin, and then she was in front of me in line. What a mess, first, she is digging for dollars and change, but she just was a bit short. So she gets out her credit card, and it is declined. Well she throws a fit. All of the other lines were really long, so I didn't dare give up my spot, but I may as well have. She was yelling her head off, and the manager had to come over, and he was like I am sorry, we can try it again, but if it won't go through, than there is nothing I can do. Would you like to call the company, and she goes on to throw another fit, ends up putting back the toilet paper (I didn't really have the cajones to ask if I could have that one instead, so now I am suck with the damn Charmin) and paying in cash.

After all of that adventure, I thought it would do just as well to just come home. Well, then I remembered that I had to be to work, so off I went.

See you later.

Yeah, me and Franklin!

Ok, so this is my cat Franklin, and me in my new glasses. He is the best cat ever. Once again, I have nothing terribly exciting. I have been really thrilled with my glasses, as now I can see things. Yay. It is not the best picture, as I just woke up, and I only have Jeremy's camera phone on which to take pictures. Anyhow, these are my new glasses, and my kitty Franklin.

Getting Glasses

OOh, I am so excited. I just went to the eye doctor, and I should have glasses by tomorrow. Apparently, I am right on the line for driving. 20/40. Anyhow, I know that it might sound crazy, but I am really excited to be getting glasses. I will be able to see! So that is about the only exciting thing that happened today, and so I am going to cut it short. I will post a picture when I have my new specs.
Peace

So this is blogging

Ok, so this is my first blog. I am sitting home watching Franklin be cute. I did just about nothing today. A bit of homework, some dishes, and relaxation. I am watching Family Guy, which is a show I love, and having a good time. So this is me being lazy.

Tomorrow is the day that I go for my eye exam. I am so excited that I will finally be able to see!

Anyhow, I think I can promise you that my blog will get more exciting from here on out, but for today I just wanted to get started.

I will just keep everyone posted as to my goings on. Talk to you later.
